Lost Railways of the Forest of Dean - Great Western Railway Forest of Dean Branch

Lost Railways of the Forest of Dean

Great Western Railway Forest of Dean Branch

The sprawling steam powered arteries of Great Britain were an awesome site cutting their way across the countryside and into the hearts of the cities. As the smoke cleared, and the Industrial Revolution came to an end, some of these lines were lost as they faded along with the sound of the whistle. This documentary explores one of the great Lost Railways of the Forest of Dean.

Fully loaded with archive images, historic footage and contemporary film this programme charts the GWR’s Forest of Dean Branch Line’s own incredible journey through time. Following the track bed observing the memorable features and landmarks, as well as the major feats of engineering that carried the line over and through the Gloucestershire countryside, the journey culminates with the adjoining railways, including the ill fated Micheldean Road & Junction Railway and its mysterious tunnel.

With a visit to the Churchway and Whimsey Branches along with the very first railway in the Forest, there is something to delight every enthusiast who’d like to discover more about this fascinating old line.

Bonus Features:
Accidents on the Line - A look at two of the incidents that occured during the lines operation.
GWR Railway Museum - Coleford Junction - Demonstration of the signal box procedure at the fictional Coleford Junction.
Forest of Dean Branch - Archive Footage - Footage used throughout the programme, uninterupted and it’s original format.
